《She》

Stories told in pixels

Set in a traditional Chinese household deeply rooted in feudal ideologies, this story follows Li Yaonan, a teenage girl who has been raised by her mother as if she were a boy. From an early age, she was forced to suppress her femininity, conforming to rigid masculine expectations. Over the years, she learned to endure and stay silent. But as she enters adolescence, her desire to be seen for who she truly is begins to clash with her upbringing. A humiliating incident in front of the boy she likes pushes her to the edge. When she returns home, her mother’s harsh remarks ignite a fierce confrontation. This is not only a clash between mother and daughter, but a pivotal moment of self-awakening and emotional liberation for Li Yaonan.

This short film was directed by myself, and I also shot several key scenes personally. In addition to directing and handling part of the cinematography, I took on the role of the male character, Wang Gang. Through participating in multiple aspects of the production—including directing, shooting, and acting—I was able to fully immerse myself in the emotional tension between characters and further develop my skills as a visual storyteller.
